We're Back!

We got back from vacation yesterday. My original intention was to blog some during our trip, but the internet connection was unreliable. My hope is to share some stories and photos (as appropriate) with you over the coming days.

As we were puttering around getting things done yesterday, I felt so happy to be back home.  Later I gave thought to what made me happy.  Here's what I came up with:

1. Being comfy and cozy.  Five days of tent camping did not include a nice comfortable sofa, television, or my robe and slippers.

2. Our bed.  No bed is as good as our own bed.  The bed in the trailer was better than the air mattress we had in the tent, but the bed at home is the best!

3.  Our shower.  I can't tell you enough how nice it is to have my own shower.  Plenty of space, hot water, and all my own stuff!

4.  Air conditioning!  Even though our whole house is not climate-controlled, having a comfortable bedroom is so much nicer than a stuffy humid tent (we did have a bit of rain last week).

5. And, last, but certainly not least, Mattie.  His kitty Nana was so wonderful to go and sit with him both in the morning and in the evening every day we were gone.  We are all so lucky to have her!  I am taking the liberty of sharing some of an email she sent us this week about her time with Mattie:
"I let him out but he was not to happy... He watched TV with me, sitting on my neck -- almost on my head -- sitting on my outstretched leg... He has a ritual of walking up my chest and staring at me in the face and then peculiarly sits on my shoulder and arm... He is a character and today would not stop talking.... I think the storm scared him...I rubbed is neck for a long while and that calmed him down..."

Aaaw! Isn't that wonderful?!  Mattie should feel so loved!

Back tomorrow with more on the trip!

The Encampment

We are here at the Gathering and all set up. You can see the screen tent (our EZ-Up with screen sides and solid sides we roll up when not needed) with our sleeping tent behind the EZ-Up.

We've been having fun at sessions and catching up with old friends. We'll update the blog as we have time over the next few days, but we're awfully busy having fun!

Out and About

Today is one of intermittent storms. We woke up at 3:30 am to heavy rain and wind. Mike was worried our awning would blow off, but fortunately all was well. Due to the forecast, the potential trip out with Mark and Paul today was canceled.

We didn't want to sit on our tushies in the camper all day, so Mike found a nice hike on the Cascades Trail. We set off in pretty iffy weather, hoping that the hike would be worthwhile and we would not get caught in the rain.

The path was well trodden and make for an easy hike. The view was beautiful when we reached the end.

We got rained on a bit, but it was fine. Mike had fun walking up closer to the falls.

I had fun, too.

We wanted to make the most of our outing, so we decided to visit Mass MoCA after our hike. I must admit to you a simple truth about me: I just dont "get" contemporary art. It didn't feel like art to me, it was just stuff that someone decided was art. There were pieces I liked, but for the most part I was mystified. The same thing happened when we visited the ICA (institute of contemporary art) in Boston. I must just be culturally ignorant.

We're back at camp putzing around now. We are actually doing some laundry, a BVR first for us.

Hope your day is a happy one!

Bennington, Vermont

We decided to take a ride up to Bennington to alleviate boredom from the rainy day. We visited Bennington Potters and Hemmings Motor News Car Lover's Oasis. We were each happy with our choices and it was a nice diversion... What a great time!

You know, I did say since we'd be on vacation, we might not blog much. Guess I lied... Oops! If you haven't be checking in regularly, be sure to scroll back and see what you've missed.

Smiles!

Where, Oh Where Did My Little Sun Go?

Oh where, oh where can it be? Today has been grey with showers. All hopes for a hike have been dashed, as we get sprinkles, then quiet skies, then sprinkles again. You can see from our flags that there is some wind, too.

Mike is making the most of the situation :)

I have finished reading Life in Balance: A Physician's Memoir of Life, Love and Loss with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia. In it, Dr. Thomas Graboys details his struggle with Parkinsons and Lewy Body Dementia over the past few years. I wanted to read his view of the physical and mental struggles brought on by the diseases to better understand the struggles that Mike's father experienced. The book was well-written and very moving. Michael and Pat plan to read it next.

I am off to find some fun excursion for the day. Smiles!

Day of Discovery

Today we went on an exploratory trip with Mark and Paul (aforementioned editors) to a skinny dipping site. It was a great adventure that will be written about in upcoming publications.

Before we left Mike and I took a photo. We have so few together. Isn't he a cutie?!

Have a happy day!

And We're Off!

Today is the first day of our summer vacation. Woo hoo! We're, tucking Mattie in his room and kissing him goodbye and then heading to camp mid-day (or so). Tonight will be spent unpacking the truck and stowing the gear from home, then gathering our Gathering supplies (thanks for the funny term, Deb!) so we are ready for our excursion.

Tomorrow we are doing a day trip with people who are traveling from Seattle, WA and Ottawa, Canada. They're coming early for the gathering with a stop-off at BVR. It should be a great excursion. Sunday and Monday we'll putter and play in the Berkshires, then off to Eastover on Tuesday.

We'll post as often as we can while we're away, but we are going to be awfully busy having fun!

Have a happy day and perfect weekend! We'll be back soon :)

This Gave Me the Giggles

Ok, I am a bit remiss today about posting. I forgot (*blush*), mostly because I had a bunch of posts done in advance, then, uhm.... RAN OUT!

I didn't even know what I was going to say today, then it came to me by accident.

I got this message on my reader from the Cheapskate over at C|Net:

Watch feature films free of charge at Hulu.com

Watch over 100 free movies at Hulu.com

(Credit: Hulu)

Many people already recognize video-streaming service Hulu.com as a great destination for watching TV shows (it has every single episode of Arrested Development, people!), but did you know it also offers movies? Over 100 of them, in fact, and some darn good titles, too. Here are my picks for the Five Best Movies to Watch on Hulu:

  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • Ice Age
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
  • Monty Python's Meaning of Life
  • The Usual Suspects

I didn't mention Sideways and The Big Lebowski because I think they're overrated--but they're there, too, along with plenty of other gems (and, truth be told, some serious dreck). You'll have to sit through the occasional commercial--and stay tethered to your PC, of course--but that's a small price to pay for watching free movies on demand. All hail Hulu!

Thanks to Craig for mentioning this deal!

I popped into the site to see if they really had anything good. For some unexplainable reason, I looked at the animations (something I rarely watch) and found this one.

It really made me smile! Have a happy day!

I Wanna Go to the Beach!!!

Doesn't this just say it all? I want to be at the beach, with the blue sky. I'm not. Hmmpf!

Have a happy day!

Hoops & Yoyo

I admit it... Hoops & Yoyo can be a little annoying after 30 minutes or so, but for the first 29 minutes, they really make me laugh. If you haven't met these little guys yet, let me introduce you (and thanks to Wikipedia for such great info!).

Hoops is the crazy pink cat who just loves to yell when he talks. He was the first of the characters and LOVES to talk. Oh, and he doesn't really like his job :)

Yoyo is the green bunny who is very sensitive. He is playful and fun and enjoys singing. He was the second character to be introduced. Unlike Hoops, he likes his job.

Piddles is a mouse-like character who wants to become an opera singer. She speaks Spanish fluently.

Chilli Bear likes to chase Hoops and Yoyo at random.

Puck is a purple mouse who usually appears in the background, uninvolved with the scene. He does not talk.

Bird, like Puck is rarely seen

Now you know them! If you are feeling down or what a change of scenery, pop into their website for a smile.

Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase... And other Blogs

I was reading my Kayak.com blog and came across an interview with Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase. The interview asks Betty, an anonymous flight attendant of 21 years, about the podcasts she's been doing for 2 1/2 years. It was very interesting.

So, I decided to check out Betty's blog/podcast. The posts seem to be once a month. The most recent, A Priest An Archaeologist and An Appalachian!, is pretty cute. Betty shares some of her more offensive stories, specifically those that she featured in previous podcasts and got some flack for, as well as some that include bathroom humor.

The 30 minute podcast was light and entertaining. I've subscribed for a monthly giggle.

I have also updated my BlogRoll. I've been reading these feeds for a while and thought you might like them too:

Wash Out!

We've had a lovely day today. We took a drive this morning. We intended to go up Mt. Greylock, but we found out the road is still under repair.

We decided to go to Pittsfield State Park instead. The map showed Potter Mountain Road to be a cut-through from Lanesborough back to Hancock. We started down, it was packed dirt. The further we got on the road, the worse the conditions were. By the time we were 2/3 the way through the 5 mile road, the ruts were 8" deep and Mike was just trying to keep the car out of them. Yikes!

We made our way back to camp and socialized a bit before beginning preparations of the scalloped potatoes we are taking to an 18 person dinner tonight.

The skies have been grey off and on, and we knew a storm was coming on. Around 3:30, the rain let loose. At first glance you don't see the rain; take a look at the roofs of the trailers and vehicles.

The view of the pavilion shows it pretty well.

Rain was POURING off our awning.

Randy doesn't look too happy...

Lucky for us, the event passed quickly. In about 30 minutes everything was back to normal. now, just an hour and a half later the birds are singing their little hearts out.

Have a happy weekend!

Two Special Events in 3 Days...

Today is the mid-point of 2 special days: my father's birthday and Father's Day. I guess my dad was just born at the right time!

Our scanner is on hiatus right now, or I would include some photos...

In the meantime, Happy Birthday, Dad!

And, Happy Father's Day to all my dads: Dad, John, and Brian.

I love you!

Morris... Mattie... Morris...

For the first time in I don't know how many years, the name "Morris" popped into my head. It was accompanied by the song "Meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow meow..." -- you know the one. So I thought, hey, I wonder if I can find anything related to Morris online.

Stupid question!

First of all, I had forgotten the similarity in looks between Morris and Mattie. Too funny!

Second, I didn't realize that Morris had a "story" and that his story can save millions of other cats. Here is his story (from http://www.9lives.com/default.aspx?page=morrismain&mn=2,20)
Morris the Cat was a real animal shelter cat—a fifteen-pound orange-striped tabby with dark green eyes and a torn eyelid.

He was rescued in 1968 by Bob Martwick, a devoted animal trainer and kennel owner. Bob pitched Morris as a spokescat to the 9Lives® brand and he was soon the focus of the entire nation as the star of their television commercials.

From then on, Morris was to become the most recognizable cat in the world. He was ubiquitous. He graced the covers of national magazines, was a darling of the national talk show circuit and even was cast in the major motion picture Shamus with Burt Reynolds.

Morris’ fame grew and grew over the years, and his accomplishments even included runs for the presidency in both 1988 and 1992 on the Finicky Party platform. Despite all of his accomplishments, Morris never forgot where he came from.

Today, 9 Lives cat food is using Morris to drive the "Morris Million Cat Rescue." To date, the program has saved 940,612+ homeless cats through adoption. Morris was even "interviewed" by Love To Know Cats last November:

Morris Million Cat Rescue

From LoveToKnow Cats

LoveToKnow Cats is pleased to have had the chance to chat with 9Lives' famously finicky "spokespurrson" about the Morris Million Cat Rescue. After all, it's not every day you have the opportunity to speak with a cat who'll talk back to you, and for once Morris wasn't reluctant to comply!

adright

The Morris Million Cat Rescue Mission

So Morris, we understand you were once a shelter cat yourself. Is this what inspired you to become involved in what is now known as the Morris Million Cat Rescue?

I was originally rescued from a shelter in Chicago, Illinois in 1968. Bob Martwick, a devoted animal trainer and kennel owner, found me in the Hinsdale Humane Society Animal Shelter weighing a mere fifteen pounds and sporting a torn eyelid. I was about to be euthanized myself, literally minutes away from death, which is why I want to help all of those cats out there about to experience the same fate!

Did you know that approximately five and a half million cats are euthanized each year, representing seventy-one percent of all cats that enter animal shelters? This means three out of every four cats who enter shelters are euthanized.

I have been very lucky, and done many great things throughout my life as a result of being given a second chance, including TV commercials, a movie, and a legendary run for President on the Finicky Party platform, in case you weren't aware. Despite this, I have never forgotten where I came from. This is why I created the Morris Million Cat Rescue.

How will the cat rescue drive work?

The Million Cat Rescue Campaign is a 9Lives-sponsored effort to find loving homes for one million homeless cats. The campaign is being led by myself and supported by my newly adopted pal, Li'l Mo. As you are well aware, I don't like to do anything "small", so a million sounds about right to me!

We have outfitted a very special bus that is currently traveling the country to raise awareness of the campaign, and to facilitate cat adoptions. The bus will attend local events, as well as stop at major retailers. Cats from local shelters will be on board the bus, and local shelter personnel will be available to educate everyone about cat adoption and caring for cats.

But it doesn't end there, 9Lives has also developed 'Welcome Home Kits' that will be provided to all new parents when they adopt a cat from a shelter. The kits will include free 9Lives products, a booklet on caring for a new cat, as well as coupons for other cat-related products.

Cats rescued on the bus, as well as those who receive the Morris Million Cat Rescue shelter kit from a participating shelter, will count towards my one million goal.

The Rescue has already kicked off and will be continuing until the beginning of August 2007. We will be completing thirty-seven different stops across America.

Do you think the need for cat rescue is greater for adults or kittens?

There are so many adult cats and kittens out there that need homes that I think it's important to concentrate our efforts on both age groups.

Are there any advantages to adopting from one age group rather than the other?

Just like people, we cats are very individual and unique. Every cat that you come across at an animal shelter will be different. It's really about finding the right match for you. Size, appearance, temperament, activity level and exercise are all important factors that adopters should consider.

The main difference between cats and kittens is in maturity, training and time. Most people believe kittens are pretty cute, but honestly, can you get more handsome than me? Plus, you have to be aware that kittens require more time and care than adult cats, as well as being more likely to get into mischief. Li'l Mo is a good example on that one, believe me!

So, you've kicked off the campaign by performing the first cat rescue yourself. What can you tell us about your new companion?

Yes, absolutely. I can't be "all meow and no action," can I?! I adopted Li'l Mo to kick off my Million Cat Rescue Campaign. I felt it was time to perhaps focus a bit less on myself, so I adopted him from a Los Angeles shelter. He looks quite like me. Extraordinarily handsome, don't you think?

Morris, how can our readers find a participating cat rescue shelter in their area?

That's really easy. All your readers have to do is go to our website, type in their zip code, as prompted, and they'll be directed to the nearest participating shelter.

Morris, thank you for spending time with us. Is there anything else you'd like to let our readers know?

There is one more thing that I would definitely like to mention.

I think prospective adopters should hear about the significant health benefits of owning a cat. Did you know that, according to the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association:

  • Pets increase the survival rate of heart attack victims. Twenty-eight percent of heart patients with pets survived serious heart attacks compared to only six percent without pets.
  • Cholesterol levels of pet owners were two percent lower than those of people without pets.
  • Elderly pet owners are happier, with fewer visits to the doctor and fewer prescriptions.
  • Pets are good for kids, helping them develop self-confidence. Eleven to sixteen year olds have a better ability to understand non-verbal communications.

Also, it's thought that cats can be very beneficial to those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Lastly, thank you so much for talking with me. I think this is a great cause and I can't wait to reach that million mark!

I was also pleased to see that the organization that I volunteer for, Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare, Inc., listed as a place to adopt homeless cats.

So, a "stray" thought turns to a "stray" cat. Pretty interesting!

Have a happy day!

Stormy Blues

The past 12 hours have been a little strange...

First, we got home last night to a dead animal on the side of the road, across from our house. I immediately thought it was Mattie. Instead it was a woodchuck (thank God). Mike hypothesizes that Mattie chased the thing into the road -- it used to live in one of our stone walls.

We visited with the family (see the evening post for photos), did some miscellaneous things, put flea/tick stuff on the yard, and watched a movie (The Air I Breathe -- I liked it). As we were laying in bed, not quite asleep, a storm made its way through Central MA.

I got up this morning with a few little tasks on my mind. I wanted to get together some past issues of N magazine for reference and needed to set up tonight's recording of Top Chef. I woke Mike up then went upstairs to file some magazines when I heard, "Tracy, where are you?" "Upstairs," I replied. In a serious tone Mike said, "Could you please come down here?"

I knew I hadn't done anything and Mattie probably hadn't done anything. What could this be about? Mike said, "Didn't you see anything strange this morning?" With a puzzled look I replied, "No?" He pointed outside to the gigantic second peak of the pine tree in our yard.

This pine tree was one of our favorites. It is super tall, somewhere in the range of 50 feet, give or take, with twin tops. The split is (was) about 30 feet off the ground. Apparently wind or lightning hit the split and ripped off one of our peaks. I took the photos below around 5:45 this morning and had to touch them up a bit. Hopefully you can see everything.

Our tree, now with only one peak

Another angle; Mattie is supervising

The second peak; I know it is hard to see. It is the long green thing that nearly fills the frame

Another shot of the fallen peak

It just looks so wrong like this...

We feel very fortunate that the tree did not land on the house, barn, or one of the cars. We were all out in the yard in that same spot last night...

Guess we'll be getting the chainsaw out to deal with the fallen peak. Not too sure about camp this weekend...

On an unrelated note, I posted my little quiz last week. So far I have only gotten TWO responses :( If you have time, fill in your answers! I will anonymously share what everyone responded in the next couple of days.

Smiles!

Fun with Connor and Fiona

Whew!

As I was thinking about today's post something crossed my mind. We're pretty boring. Our summer activities seem to consist mainly of yard work. I then justified this with the reality that we have nearly an acre of yard, and keeping it up isn't easy. We also do our share of playing on the weekends, so the hard work is balancing. I guess... Sometimes it just feels exhausting.

Last night we decided to tackle the strip of garden that is on the lower side of the stone wall next to the driveway. The plan was to do some weeding. I started up the hill a little bit. When I got around the corner, I saw that Mike was really "into" the task.

He figured, why pull weeds? We [liberally] sprayed Roundup a couple of weeks ago, and everything was decimated. Why not dig it up?

Where you see dirt was dead weeds and grass before Mike cleaned it up.

This is the next section down. It had not been cleared when I took the picture. Below it is the "after."

Mike stopped to let me take his picture. Thanks, sweetie :)

This is not my most flattering self-portrait, but I wanted you all to see that I really was there and working...

Mattie's role in this project was limited to sleepy supervision.

It sure came out nice, though! We have a good amount of work to do in this area, but this is a good start.

We were so dirty we had to hose down before we could go in the house.

Have a happy day!

Hot, Hot, Hot Weekend

This weekend was Hot, Hot, Hot! Whew, in the mid 90's which is unusual in New England :)

We had a fun trip to Jiminy Peak on Saturday morning with Steve, Helen, Ali, and Morgan. The alpine slide and mountain coaster were lots of fun! I'll try to get some photos posted soon. Saturday night was dinner for 8 -- we were guests -- and lots of fun.

We stayed late at camp yesterday and got home around 3 pm. We cut the grass then planted some gifts for Mattie -- 2 varieties of catmint. Ours didn't come up this year.

Mattie was pretty sated after rolling around in his new plants.

I was also pleased to see yet another iris. I cannot believe how late they are this year!

We were also treated to a visit by Pat, Deirdre, Connor, and Fiona. We had a nice time!

We made a yummy dinner last night, too. Salad, crab cakes (from Trader Joe's) and zucchini with Emmentaler. Yum, yum, yum! I used a little too much cheese, but it was good anyway. After 4 loads of laundry and washing the car, we settled down to watch Lars and the Real Girl. We liked it.

Have a happy day!
