Retirement...

That is such a nice word. A state that some of us yearn to reach...

My father is celebrating his retirement today. Tomorrow will be the first day of his new chapter.

Congratulations, Dad! Relax and have fun -- you deserve it!

I'm also looking forward to spending some birthday time with Melissa this morning, and having a lovely lunch with my Mom and Brian.

Busy, busy!

Yawn...

I am heading to Kansas City today for a quick two day trip. Pick up by the shared van taking me to TF Green Airport in Providence, RI is 3:40 am. The 6:40 flight may just be the only thing that is bright that early in the morning :)

I'll be into KC by 10:30 or so, and ready to join my father, his staff, and many family members for the 1 pm party.

I'm sure tonight will hold lots of fun!

Smiles!

Update: I got to take a towncar to the airport instead of a shared van...  Luxurious!  My flights were mostly on time, and we all arrived early for my father's celebration today.

It was very nicely done and lots of fun.  Many of his co-workers attended and shared memories.  He gave a nice speech and passed on some "legacy" items to his co-workers.

Happy Night!

These Made Me Laugh

This must be a mindless week. I was looking for funny cat photos -- here's what I found.

I guess it is obvious why this struck my funny bone...

Who could even plan that?!

I'm glad to know that others feel the same as I do.

If I even remotely thought this was Mattie, Mike would be in so much trouble!

Yes, I really am entertained this easily!

Have a happy day!

Funny Quizzes

Ok, so here's my story. I was trying to think up a quiz or survey to put on the blog today. So, I Googled "fun quiz" and found the site HumanForSale.com. I thought, "What the heck; I'll try it!"

So, I was going through the questions, and it wanted to know my IQ (which I thought was 130, but wasn't sure)... So, I went to the linked site Free-IQtest to get that information.

Then... The question wanted to know my score from Am I Dumb? Of course I did that quiz, too.

Whew!!! What a lot of work! I am sharing my real, genuine results. I did not alter anything. Here they are:

Happy Memorial Day

On this day, Memorial Day, we would like to take a moment to honor and remember all of the US military personnel who have lost their lives in battle, throughout the years. It is of no importance if we support the current war or not, because we will always support the brave and dedicated people in our military.

Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday honored Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. After World War I, the holiday was changed to include those who died in any war or military action (paraphrased from Wikipedia).

God Bless the Soldiers who Fight for Our FREEDOM.

Celebrations and Miscellany

What a nice week it has been!

We had dinner at Texas Roadhouse Wednesday night with Paul and Deb. We had a lovely time catching up on our camp and theirs. We sure miss seeing them on the weekends... We exchanged birthday gifts while we were there...

Deb got me this beautiful necklace and earrings from Fire and Thyme (an Etsy shop in Northborough). Aren't they fabulous?! Thank you, Deb!

I got her this pretty dish from handmade Pottery and this cute card that coordinated from JaneSays (of course both Etsy shops, which I have mentioned over and over because I love them!). It was pretty fun to celebrate an Etsy birthday!

We are taking today off for an early start on the Memorial Day weekend. Four days of relaxing will be nice!

Every time I walk by my Anniversary roses from Mike, amazed that they still look so fabulous.

Yesterday I cut their stems and put them in a different vase. They are now a more petite arrangement. I can't believe they look so good after 19 days!

As you may have surmised, this is another post of miscellany... I got a new hair dryer back in March. Mine had been getting hot in the electrical cord (never a good sign), then sparked and went "PFFFFT" while I was using it one morning. This caused quite a scene as I screamed, threw it to the ground, then attempted to explain to Mike when he came running. Anyway, I got an Elchim Professional 2001. It was a little pricey (though I paid $67 compared to the current price of $80), but well below the suggested retail of $125. I know, I know, that is a lot of money... I was crossing my fingers that I would like it.

(Mine is all black) I have to say, I have been using the new dryer for 2 months now. I absolutely love it. It dries my hair in half the time any other dryer has taken, and has caused so much less damage. I have been wishing that either a) there was a travel version, or b) it was way cheaper, so that I could get one for camp. I just can't justify the cost for the estimated 35 days of usage a year... I definitely recommend it if you have thick hair (like I do) or curly hair (like I don't).

So, enough of that little plug!

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

This and That

Most of the flowers we showed you last month have gone now. The cherry trees are covered in leaves; the forsythia have gone from yellow to green; the daffodils have served their purpose.

Now the allium are out. They are so pretty, but stinky!

The lilacs are in bloom in the front of the house.

The rhododendron by the driveway is ready to bloom.

The hostas are getting bigger. Don't you just love the summer?

With the warm weather finally being closer to arriving, we have gotten our butts in gear and switched the winter clothes in our closet for summer duds. It's about time!

I filled the extra space that my sweater tote is no longer occupying with my camp bag (in the back) and a new cute storage cubby for shoes that don't fit in the sleeves I have mounted on the side of the closet (hard to see in this photo).

Our other "big" upgrade is getting new bedside lamps. We had the other ones for years and years. They served their purpose long ago. I was so glad to throw the old ones away!

It is such a nice feeling to have things freshened for summer :)

Smiles!

Something Store

Sometimes in life I want a little surprise. Often I want to surprise someone else... So, when I got this news article from Fresh Trend, I though, "Huh?"

Something Store - Surprise Yourself!

We were so enamored with one of our most recent BlogAd sponsors (see the far right column) that we decided to share a little more about them.

SomethingStore.com could possibly be the most unique, weird gift you could possibly give someone, or on the flip side, it could be the lamest thing in the history of the world (although we doubt it). The reason it could go either way is because you don’t exactly know what you’re giving, but you are giving something.

For just $10 they’ll send something to someone. Vague but fun. If you’re a little apprehensive give their SomethingTracker a peek and you can see some of th recent gifts that have been shipped.

One final note, SomethingStore is the first ever gift idea that falls under every single category that we cover, since well…you never know what you’re gonna get.

I am always game to try something new, but didn't want to tell everyone about it until I knew if it would be supercool or superstupid. I ordered myself one something (price: $10 with shipping) on May 6. According to the site I would have my something in 5 days -- May 13 by my estimate.

In reality, my "something" shipped on May 14 via USPS. I was out of town anyway, so who cares?! It arrived on my doorstep (figuratively, since it was delivered to my office) on May 19.

As you can see, it came in a padded envelope... Hmmmm.... What would it be?! It could be cool, it could be dumb. Open it already!!!!

Turns out, my something is really COOL! It is a leather wallet on a string kind of thing, with room for keys, ID, credit cards, etc... They didn't even know I am a girl that would like this, so it is really perfect!

Leave it to me to take a chance on a $10 mysterious gift... I am so glad it worked out, though who knows for the next time :) Now I have to start thinking of who'll I'll start randomly sending gifts to...

Have a Happy Day!

Where Oh Where Did My Little Cat Go?

Oh where, oh where can he be?
He's chasing the mice on the weather-vane,
There's no better place he would be...

Our friends Steve and Helen surprised on Sunday night with our birthday gift. Steve's talents know no boundaries, and he and Helen are very thoughtful when it comes to birthday creations.

Isn't this the coolest weather vane you've ever seen?

Look at the mice climbing their way up the legs...

And the kitty watching the one on the top, just waiting to pounce!

They know Mattie for sure! This is not the final location for the weather vane. When it finds its permanent spot we'll plant a climbing flower underneath it.

Thanks Steve and Helen! Have a Happy Day, Everyone!

West Point and Hyde Park, NY

We mentioned that last week we were in West Point, NY for a business meeting Mike had. We really enjoyed seeing the campus and the way the cadets live. Since we were going onto a military base, security was high. We had to go through two checkpoints before being admitted to the academy grounds. At the first we showed our ID, at the second we showed our ID and went through a vehicle search. I even got a random vehicle search when I entered on my own once... A MP searched through everything in the truck, requested my license, registration, and proof of insurance. Then he called everything in and waited while I was checked out.

This gate is beyond the second checkpoint. It is lowered for each guest after the check.

Other sites around the academy...

The Presbyterian chapel.

Trophy point commemorates those who have died in various battles. This is a monument to the Civil War. Each cannon represents a battlefield.

We saw the freshman (Plebes) cadets do maneuvers around 5:20 pm.

While we were taking photos around Trophy Point the USMA helicopter arrived with the superintendent. It touched down in the field in front of his house. Cool...

At 6 pm (in the summer) a cannon is fired while...

A bugler plays a song, and...

The American flag is taken down for the night. Anyone within sight of the flag stops what they are doing and salutes. Those in cars stop, get out, and salute.

We went to Newburgh for dinner Thursday night. Torches was a nice place.

Hyde Park

We spent Friday in Hyde Park, NY. Hyde Park is the home of FDR, many mansions and the Culinary Institute of America. We arrived at the FDR library/mansion just after a tour left, so we didn't get to explore that venue. Instead we visited the Vanderbilt mansion. Built by Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt (son of the Vanderbilt that built the Breakers in Newport, RI), this mansion was cozy and intimate -- for a 44,000 square foot mansion. We greatly enjoyed the tour.

Next on our adventure was lunch at the CIA. We chose Escoffier Restaurant for lunch. Though we didn't have reservations (recommended) they were able to seat us. It was absolutely fabulous. The chef sent out a scallop Amuse Bouche for each of us. It was most excellent.

I started with Tartlet Filled with Escargots, Mushrooms and Ham and Mike had Warm Salad of Shrimp and Artichokes with Basil. The servers brought our dishes and presented them at the exact same moment. And it was yummy....

For my entree, I chose Grilled Tri-Tip Sirloin, Shallot Sauce, Straw Potatoes and Broccolini. Mike had Red Snapper Fillet over a Spring Pea Risotto. We were both very pleased. Again, presentation was phenomenal.

We finished the meal with coffee and I had Hot Mocha Cake with Coffee Sauce.

This was the best prepared and presented meal (never mind lunch) that we have ever had. If you have the opportunity to go the CIA, you should!!! This is the training ground for many of America's top chefs, including: Anthony Bourdain, Todd English, Harold Dieterle, Rocco DiSpirito, and more... And if you are a top chef fan, add Ilan, Hung, and at least 6 of this season's chefs. I could go on and on about the CIA, but this post is stretching and I am getting sleepy.

Our week was so wonderful! I hope I've share at least a little of that with you...

Smiles!

West Point (NY) -- updated

We have been at West Point since Tuesday evening. Mike is here for a work meeting, while I am just tagging along for fun. We're staying at the Thayer Hotel, which overlooks the Hudson River. It is nice to get to do something a bit out of the ordinary.

Updated 11:45 am: After waiting at the South Dock for over an hour I gave up hope on Constitution Island. There was, apparently, some miscommunication amongst the staff. I am a bit disappointed, but these things do happen.

Today I will visit Constitution Island. Aside from being an important part of the American Revolution, the island was home to Susan and Anna Warner, two important literary figures. Susan wrote The Wide, Wide World; Anna wrote the words to a hymn that most of us know -- Jesus Loves Me. The island is open to the public June to September. I was lucky to be able to attend with a school group that was scheduled to be on the island. I'll be at West Point's South Dock by 10:30 am to take ferry to the island. Below is a little video showing the island.

I am sure I'll have a more detailed post about the fun I'm having once we are back home!

Have a Happy Day :)

The Hollow

I am so excited! I got my copy of The Hollow May 5 and started reading it May 8. It is the first book I have purchased for a long time. The best part? It is signed by Nora Roberts! I finished it on Monday night (the 12th) and LOVED LOVED LOVED it...

I don't want to give too much away about this one, but Fox and Layla pair up in this installment. If you read the first one, you knew this would probably happen. The pace is different than in the first book, but it is still great. Character development is great and you continue the attachment to characters that began in the first book. Now I am dying for the final of the trilogy in December! I don't want the winter part, just the book!!!

If you read the first book in the trilogy, Blood Brothers, go buy this book right away!!!

Inside, Outside, Music All Around

So, you know I love music... All kinds of music -- Jazz, Rock, Classical, Country... I am not an aficionado by any stretch of the imagination and my tastes are pretty varied (i.e. anyone who like Rachmaninoff, Depeche Mode, and Dixie Chicks -- whew!).

Ever since Dad and John gave us an iPod for Christmas it has been my best friend.

The birthday fairy knows me very well. She flew right in with some outdoor speakers for our patio. My installation expert (Michael) is going to mount them under the eve of the house and wire them into the third zone of our A/V receiver.

We'll be able to listen to CDs, DirecTV music, or our digital collection (stored on the Mac mini that is also hooked into the system) inside and/or outside at will! The fairy even got me an outdoor rated volume control so we can control the volume outside, independently of the volume in the house. Cool, huh?!

Once we get the setup, well, set up we'll take some pictures and/or a video to share. You'll probably see that in a few weeks!

Smiles!

Mother's Day Goodies

Happy Mother's Day to all moms, especially my Mom and Michael's Mom!

I did my shopping for Mother's Day so far in advance that I've been itching to share the fun things we got. I had to wait for the actual day to pass; now that it has, here goes!

http://image1.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.22321413.jpg

We started out with a pretty card to celebrate the day. Thanks April at JaneSays!

http://image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.23851012.jpg

Mom and I have been told that we are very much alike (I suspect you'll agree if you know us both). We thought this dish was a perfect way to commemorate that. Thanks to Leesa at handgrown Pottery.

http://image3.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.23991743.jpg

We all need something pretty, and you can't beat earrings. Jo at i dream i can fly Artisan Jewelry hit the mark with these.

Michael got his Mom a whole host of cards. The sneaky guy sealed up the ones from him before I could photograph them!

This is the card from both of us.

We also got her some flowers. Aren't they pretty?!

More than anything, Mother's Day is about saying I Love You and letting your mom know she is special. Moms -- You're the best!

I'm Trapped in the House, but I can still Blog!

My turn to post on the blog again... I've been so busy outside checking out the new flowers and animals that I have barely had a chance to sleep. If I did have time to sleep, I'd love to have and iPod like this guy...

humorous pictures

After sleeping, I practice being a Houdini like this guy... I don't need to be in the house while Mike and Tracy are at camp!

humorous pictures

But since I am stuck inside, back to bed I go...

Have a happy weekend! Tracy's Mother's Day post will appear on Monday.

Happy Hibiscus

Deirdre and the kids gave us Hibiscus plants for our birthdays. They always make me think of warm places like Florida, Hawaii, the Caribbean...

The red ones were for Michael.

These are pink (no blooms for the photo) and are for me.

I didn't know about hibiscus, so I did some studying about them. Did you know that a hibiscus bloom usually lives for only one day? I won't feel bad about cutting them for the house now!

According to Wikipedia the hibiscus is a national flower:

The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Bunga Raya or "Chinese hibiscus") is the national flower of Malaysia.

The ma‘o hau hele (Hibiscus brackenridgei) is the state flower of Hawaii.

The Hibiscus syriacus (Mugunghwa or "Rose of Sharon") is the national flower of South Korea.

The Native Hibiscus is a national emblem of the Stolen Generation of indigenous peoples in Australia. Its colour denotes compassion and spiritual healing.

Interestingly, the Rose of Sharon is also a hibiscus. We have a purple one and a white one and always look forward to their blooms. I never would have guessed them to be hibiscus :)

I also studied up on the care of hibiscus in northern states. When left potted they can survive year round. I am crossing my fingers that I do things right (I am pretty confident that I can) and have plans to put them in the basement with artificial lighting over-winter.

I am sure I'll post more about these pretty plants in the coming months.

Have a Happy Day!
