Florida Family Coming Home

Pat, Deirdre, Connor, and Fiona are heading home from Florida today. We've been having fun sending them videos (which are pretty boring unless you are our 3 1/2 year old niece and nephew) and they have been sending us postcards, stickers, and pictures. We are just about done with our Florida citrus Pat sent...

As you can see, they are having a blast at the playground!

We are looking forward to their return visit and lots of fun. We're betting the coming week will be full of celebrations (birthdays and Mother's Day) and catching up.

More More Birthday Stuff

My birthday is still happening :) I love love love it! It is so much fun to have a multi-day event!

I got lovely cards from Connor and Fiona (and Pat and Deirdre) as well as from Helen and Steve yesterday. How very thoughtful :)

Happy Days!

Camp is Open!

A quick note, the posting has 3 sections (be sure to keep reading!)...

I neglected to share our great weekend at camp when, yesterday, I focussed on myself. Shame on me! Now I am back in the groove of things...

We made it to camp around 1:30 pm on Friday. It was a beautiful ride and such a nice day. Our trailer was all set in its spot and positioned perfectly. Our first obstacle was to lower the piece of the deck that Paul had set to swing up for removal. For those of you that cannot picture this, long story short is that the site is not a straight pull-through, so having a flip-up section allows for positioning without losing deck space. Anyhoo, Paul warned us it would take 3 guys to lower the section down. Au contraire! It took one Mike and one Tracy. Voila! I won't say it happened without a bit of work, but we did it all by ourselves. Did you see those bruises from me patting myself on the back?!

Our next task was to hook all the utilities up. I hooked up the electricity (more on that to come), sewer -- including taking the cap off the trailer and having icky sludge drip on my bare hands, yuck!!! -- and water. We used the slinky-like sewer pipe as a temporary measure to get going. Mike cleaned up around the tires, leveled, etc... He did so much I don't even know what he did! After a bunch of stuff I cannot remember, I was cleared to start the inside work.

The inside of the trailer was the dustiest I have ever seen it. I think the slide jostled around during the move... The good news is that those dryer sheets are awesome. The place smelled great. I picked up the 200 (it seemed) but I am sure we'll find theme for weeks to come! I cleaned everything and made it sparkle, then started unpacking the 7 totes and several bags of belongings. Mike was outside doing all kinds of stuff (I don't know what, but things looked really great when I went out there). I know he filled the tires. This was a big deal because the air compressor wouldn't work. He tinkered for the longest time. In the meantime, I kept complaining about the refrigerator not getting cold. Mike the Magician solved both at once: I had not flipped the breaker for electricity. Oops! I plugged in the cord but didn't know the service was set to off. I ran the inside of the trailer on battery power for almost two hours... I've never plugged in before, I didn't know! Mike also got our DirecTV set up and working in under 10 minutes. Woo hoo!

We were pretty much all set up by 6:00 pm. We had a nice dinner then watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It was pretty dumb, but it made us laugh. Laughing is good :) No Ghetto fire was allowed due to the widespread fire risk in the Berkshires. That was stinky.

Saturday was our bonus day, having gotten so much done on Friday. I planted some bulbs around the deck, planted a whiskey barrel with more bulbs, and Mike did some landscaping and deck stuff. Mike installed the hard sewer pipe (bye bye Mr. Slinky, back to the bumper for you); he was able to re-use a portion of our old one. No glue or fuss, easy peasy! We got our flagpoles erected and outside prettiness up. After a quick ride to Pittsfield we washed the trailer. Boy, was it dirty. Icky icky icky! It sure does look pretty now :)

We cleaned up, then spent time socializing. Dinner was nice and relaxing, then I fell asleep by 8:30. I was exhausted. So much for me being any fun....

It rained a bit Sunday night, so we packed up and left by 10:30 Sunday morning. We got lots done and are looking forward to 5 months of sunshine, good times, and great friends.

More Birthday Stuff

Thanks again to everyone who made my birthday so special! I am especially lucky because I have a week of festivities. Mike's birthday is Friday and our Anniversary is Monday. For me, this a week long celebration.

On that note, Mike's family is out of town in Florida and will be back tomorrow. We are waiting to celebrate our birthdays with them. They certainly didn't forget me, and I don't want to leave anyone with the impression I felt forgotten.

I know how loved I am by all my family and friends, every single day. I am blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful people and am truly grateful.

The Five Love Languages

I followed a link on one of my favorite blogs (Little Bit Funky) to this quiz... It was fun and only took a few minutes. I am very interested by my results. I'll have to have Mike take it!

Happy Birthday (to Me)

Today is my birthday! I thought to myself, "Self, maybe it would be silly to blog about your own birthday." Self replied, "Naw, do what you want." Ok, I didn't really have a conversation like that. I did think it through and decided, what the heck! I can say it is my birthday :)

Mike and I celebrated my birthday yesterday. Why a day early? Well, we have town meeting tonight and feel it is our civic duty to attend. Since we leave for work at 6:15 am, and will only have an hour tonight between getting home and going to town meeting, it made sense to do my birthday early.

Here are my gifts before opening:

Mike and I thought it would be a nice opportunity to use our new camcorder (our joint birthday gift) to make a video --warning, it is kind of dull if you are not me.

I got these beautiful gifts! From left to right: handmade soap, tea, and a handmade mug from Melissa; a handmade bag and matching wallet, huge soup cups, and beautiful matching bowl from Mom and Brian, and a lovely card (and money) from my Grandparents.

Thank you so much everyone! I appreciate your thought and love.

After gift opening, Mike took me out the restaurant of my choice: The Sole Proprietor. I had a delicious meal of Tuna Steak Sashimi and Mike had North Atlantic Haddock Newburg. Both were fantastic.

He insisted I get desert. I ordered Flan and look at how beautifully it was presented. What a great job -- I never could have written Happy Birthday so nicely :)

We spent the remainder of the evening relaxing (my choice) and recovering from the busy weekend -- more about that tomorrow.

This morning I awoke to beautiful and thoughtful e-cards from Mom and Brian, Melissa and Serena, Deb and Paul, Jean and Bob, Nicky, Debbie, and of course, My Honey. What a lovely start!

As I was getting ready, looked outside to see two bunnies sitting in the yard. They were hanging out -- I think protecting their nest -- and I felt they came to wish me a special day... Something funny about the photo...

This is third in my series, taken at 5:58 am. It was not that dark to my human eye.

I did extensive manual editing in one photo package, then did some auto-correcting in Picasa. What an amazing difference! Thank goodness for computers!

I am sure the rest of my day will be splendid. My moods so far can be likened to weather: sunny, partly cloudy, and lightening. I am blessed with being a woman on my birthday (you know what I mean) and the accompanying moodiness. I am looking forward to a sunny forecast!

And last, but certainly, not least, Happy Birthday Father Roger! We share this date and hold each other dear.

Smiles!

Time for Camp!

It is that time of year, time to open camp! We've been getting things together. We know we haven't gotten everything, but it is a good start.

These are the basic, non-perishable, food supplies. More will have to be purchased, but this is a start. I am so ready to get these out of the kitchen floor. What a mess!!!

Totes, boxes, and bags are all lined up. They contain bedding, towels, clothes, paperwork, and all kinds of other goodies. I hope they all fit in the truck!

Last minute necessities from BJs. No, we are not taking all that Splenda (most is for home). Yes, we are taking all that vodka. It will last us many weekends :)

We managed to fit all that stuff into the back of the truck. The cover is down and sealed (so we don't look like the Clampetts), and we have the whole cab of the truck to fill with last minute items.

After we finished packing stuff up, I though Mattie would enjoy getting some of his winter coat brushed away. He loves getting brushed, I think he thinks it is kitty massage. We were left with a huge wad of hair after our 20 minute session (what you see above is only about 60% of what came off him). I left to get the camera and came back to him eating his hair like cotton candy. What a nut!

He then proceeded to roll around with his hair, brush, and halter. Oh, so easy to entertain!

I took the hair to the trash, but Mattie didn't mind. Playing with his brush was still fun. It is so great to have a kitty with personality!

Think of us today as we are setting up and unpacking! Have a happy day :)

More Plants are Blooming!

We found more plants in bloom when we "toured" the yard after work.

The cherry tree we planted in Brett's memory is blooming. You can see that the newer branches have leaf shoots but no flowers... The same thing happened last year with the new branches.

The other cherry tree by the milk house (which we bought at Lowe's about 4 years ago for $30) is also blooming.

Grandma's rhodie is ready to bloom. It usually comes out for Mother's Day. Good to see that we didn't shock it during the move.

We got some flowers for this planter Carolyn gave me two years ago. I know it looks puny now, but once these guys take root it should be pretty. This plant will go to camp.

As usual, I bought too many flowers :) I potted the rest up for this hanging plant. It will live at home for the summer.

I'll keep posting photos as things progress. The lilacs should bloom in a couple of weeks, the grass should be shooting up soon, and the hostas will unfurl within a month or so... And the flowers... So man flowers!

Smiles!

New Blog Design

In other news... I am so, so, so excited about the new design for the blog :) I picked it up over at Gisele Jaquenod's Birdie Says. So cute and happy! I love free, fun things!

Old Ads

Serious Eats includes old ads pretty regular in their postings. I watched the first one recently, and really felt that I had missed out by not watching more of them. Take a look at the one below, for Folgers coffee:

If Mike asked for a "good cup of coffee" for breakfast, you better believe I'd high-tail it to Dunkin' Donuts and call it good, not sit at home with my friend and worry about it. I can say that because Mike would never be so lame as to ask to coffee for his birthday :)

They also featured this rejected chicken sandwich commerical:

I don't want to bore you by going on and on and on with these food videos, but there are a lot out there. If you want to stroll down memory lane, or just get a few laughs, Serious Eats Video tags is a good place to start.

Tips for Traveling by Air

Do you remember the days when traveling was easy and fun? I sure do, fondly, I must say. That's how old memories always are... Here's one of my memories... Mike and I were still living apart. Our visits were always jam-packed with fun and romance, and the trip home was never welcome. We'd always put off my return until the last minute. No, I mean, the very last minute. I would show up to the airport to check-in and run to the gate 15 minutes before flight time.

Baby, times have changed. Between long lines, new rules, extra security, and flight problems, flying is not what it used to be. That said, I thought it would be nice for me to share some of my travel resources.

Planning your trip
For years and years I used Travelocity to plan my trips. I guess those years have passed. I have found better and brighter tools for travel... I am starting with my favorite resource and will include my take on each:
ResourceSummaryWhy I love it
Kayak
My planning resource
Flight searches are easy and flexible. You can search only one airport, or compare prices for multiple airports. You can set parameters that constrain take-off/landing windows, airlines, days +/- your planned trip dates, flight duration, number of stops, and price. If you find a segment you like, the results can be narrowed to those that include that segment. It searches airlines, other travel sites, and consolidators. It does not search Southwest, but no one does. They also put out a nice blog.
SeatGuru
Flight seating information
Sometimes it is hard to know which seats are good. This site lets you choose the airline and aircraft (part of the flight info as you are in the booking stage), then gives you a run-down about each seat. If you hate those seats that don't recline (I do) or get a lot of bathroom noise (yuck), check this site as you book tickets online.
Farecast
Fare prediction resource
Not sure if you want to purchase tickets now or wait? Farecast gives predictions for most major cities on based on pricing trends.
Yapta
Fare tracking resource
Once you have purchased tickets, you can set Yapta to watch those fares and notify you if they fall. Sometimes you can get money back or get a voucher. This notification service is a handy way to track the price for the flight you've booked.
Vayama
International travel resource
If you are planning a trip abroad, Vayama is a great (and fun) resource. You can search for flights by a map (I love it!), search through deals, and restrict to low-cost carriers.

Packing
You have your tickets and are getting ready for the flight. Easy, right? Not necessarily. All the rules and regulations make packing a bit of a trick, too.

Be sure to check in advance the baggage policy for your airline. Kayak put the list together that I link to here, but be sure to check with the airline for updates. Most airlines have limitations for the weight of your baggage. Weigh your bags at home! It doesn't matter how stupid you feel when you do this, you will feel much more stupid at the airport as you repack your bag in front of a huge line of people because you exceeded the limit. Many airlines are charging a surcharge if your bags weigh too much -- that $50-$75 would really hurt.

Also be advised that some airlines are limiting the number of bags. Double-check what is allowed before leaving home.
Make sure you know what is allowed in your carry ons. This changes, so be sure and check before each and every flight. Also be sure to check what is not allowed on board. It sounds easy, and we all think it is obvious, but we are human and we forget. Years ago I got bagged at the Kansas City Airport for having scissors (a nice pair of Fiskars) that I used to open boxes for a training. They had to be thrown away.
If you are traveling with children or have a medical condition, make sure to know what is allowed on-board.
If you or someone you are traveling with has a food allergy, check in advance what foods will be available on board. To be on the safe side you should bring your own food. I'd also recommend bringing sanitizer wipes -- those tray tables are the most germ infested part of the plan -- and plane sheets to protect your little one from unsafe seat ickies.
Bring you own headphones. Many airlines make you purchase headphones if you want to enjoy that in-flight movie. The jacks are standard size, so your own will fit and will probably work better. If you are disturbed by other passengers, get an MP3 player and load it with songs. It will make the flight so much more relaxing.
Load up on magazines to read on the plane, then leave them behind for someone else. There's nothing worse than having nothing to do on a flight. If you don't like magazines, bring a book or games.

Traveling
I have a few more tips related to day of travel and tracking flights.

Check the status of your flight prior to leaving for the airport. I know this takes extra time, but it may save you time in the end. Flight delays and schedule changes have become the norm. Use the carriers website or reservations line.
Parking at the airport? Check the airports website for information about which lots are open. If you're counting on using the closest lot and it is closed, you may just miss your flight.
Always, always, always program your phone with the phone number for the airline. This is your hot-button to flight information and if you run into trouble you may be able to re-book faster by calling -- even inside the airport -- than dealing with a counter agent. I can't tell you how many time this has worked out for us.
If your flight is canceled, try getting seats on an earlier flight; you may have a better chance. Signing up for flight notifications by email or SMS may also give you an early heads-up (thanks, Kayak).
Hydrate on the plane! Planes are very dry. Be sure to drink water, use hand lotion to keep your skin from drying out, and use lip gloss to keep your lips from cracking.
If you are not the traveler, but will be picking up the traveler (or you just care), be sure to track the flight. I use FlightStats. It is free and you can even have it send you updates via text message if you are driving into the airport.

This advice is all mine, not a compilation from other sources. I'm no travel professional, I just get on planes for work or fun like everyone else. The items above are not comprehensive. I have gone back and added more as I have been typing. I will probably think of other things later and will try to add them to this page.

If you have hints, tips, or comments, please speak up! Everyone is a treasure trove.

Fly safely!

Lovely Weekend

We were blessed again with lovely weather this weekend. We spent the whole time working in the yard, and we hope it pays dividends in the months to come.

The Cherry Tree is ready to bloom...

The Dogwood is so pretty!

The Lilacs are coming along, too...

We painted the chimes (and you can see the hanger Steve made in this photo).

Mike lined the mowers up like little soldiers :)

As you can see, Mattie was helping as only he can.

We had 3 yards of loam delivered so we could rehab this area. Remember for many years it was driveway. When we got the new driveway it became dirt. We moved a tree and planted grass seed. It should be a pretty recreation in a few weeks :)

This is the tree's new home. I hate this tree; it is the ugliest tree ever. I think Mike secretly likes it; he bought it.

We moved this rhododendron from by the stone wall. This spot will be so much nicer. It has grown so much since my grandmother got it for us.

We transplanted this Dogwood from another part of the yard. It will make the front of the house prettier.

We moved this rhodie, too.

I can't remember if we shared this before. It is a sign Steve made for us. Too bad people don't do as it says :)

Have a happy day!

Overachieving Cats

I finally got some time alone with the computer (Tracy is horrible about sharing) and checked out the news at YouTube. I found all of these cats on there that are, frankly, giving the rest of us a bad name. They have talents. Who ever heard of a cat with talents? Now Mike and Tracy are going to expect me to do some cheap tricks.

I am glad we don't have a pool, or they might put me in a scuba set like this poor schmuck.

Or a piano with expectations I will take lessons (this one is a bit unnecessarily
long).

I can talk, but not quite as well as this guy (Bubba? How did your tail grow back?)...

Now that I think of it, I do have talents... I'm cute and I can train humans. Hee hee... Look at what I can get Tracy to do every night. I don't have to walk, nope. I don't walk down in the morning either. Those other cats have it wrong -- this is the way you do tricks!

Music: The Driving Force

I wouldn't call myself musically inclined, attuned, or even musically knowledgeable. I like music, and listen to a wide variety. My tastes have changed over the years (thank God for my parents who did not like the heavy metal stage), but I have always turned to music when I want to "tune things out."

In High School the artists were Jodi Watley or Salt 'n' Peppa (even Too Short and 2 Live Crew). College included Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails. The artists change but the release, oh the release... It is still the same.

I find myself turning to my favorite album, turned up loud, during times of frustration. These times of frustration seem to happy because of work situations. When I feel particularly irritable I put on headphones and turn my iPod way up. In the car, the volume cranks so I can hear the base and sing really really loud. Maybe that is my way of getting back at the environment around me -- my singing redefines the word awful.

The role of music came to mind on Tuesday as I drove home blasting Gwen Stefani's Love.Angel.Music. The good news? I walked in the door at home with a big smile (and tired feet from walking down memory lane).

I say, whatever your outlet is, use it. We all need to free our minds and reset now and again.

Happy Days!

Daffodils are Out!

I am having a late day today, with Mike being gone... I was ready to get dressed when I looked outside to see the daffodils are out!!! I had to go out and get some pictures.

Still more waiting to come out.

Daffys in a spot of sun.

National Grilled Cheese Month

I was reading the Serious Eats Blog yesterday when I learned that April is National Grilled Cheese Month (Mmmm... Connor and Fiona love grilled cheese). **As a side note, who comes up with these months? The website I link to appears to have a relationship to Kraft, owned by Altria, AKA Philip Morris. Sounds suspiciously commercialized to me.** Apparently the Food Network had a grilled cheese Throwdown with Bobby Flay (whose show I have never seen). Two recipes are listed on FoodTV's website, and both look interesting:

The Calvert (Stink's Favorite)
Recipe courtesy Connie and Bill "Stink" Fisher
See this recipe on air Tuesday Apr. 22 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
Show: Throwdown with Bobby Flay
Episode: Grilled Cheese
The Calvert (Stink's Favorite)
2 tablespoons balsamic mayonnaise
1 (5-inch) round rosemary focaccia
5 slices Monterey Jack cheese
4 ounces oven-roasted turkey, sliced
2 pieces applewood smoked bacon, cooked until crisp
1/2 avocado, sliced into thin strips
Spread the balsamic mayonnaise on the inside of top and bottom of focaccia. Place with mayonnaise sides facing up on a flat top grill at 350 degrees F. Drape 2 slices of cheese over top and 2 slices over bottom of roll so as to cover the entire surface area. Place dome over focaccia to facilitate melting and even heat. While cheese is melting, place turkey on grill to warm. Place bacon in an "x" over the turkey. Cover with avocado and remaining cheese. Once cheese is melted all around (focaccia and turkey) assemble the grilled cheese and close. Place finished sandwich in a panini grill until roll is crisp and has added squishiness! EAT!!!

Grilled Brie and Goat Cheese with Bacon and Green Tomato
Recipe courtesy Bobby Flay, 2008
See this recipe on air Tuesday Apr. 22 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
Show: Throwdown with Bobby Flay
Episode: Grilled Cheese
Grilled Brie and Goat Cheese with Bacon and Green Tomato
16 slices center-cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch thick pieces
2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
8 slices Pullman bread, sliced 1-inch thick
8 to 12 ounces really good quality brie
2 green tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
Watercress
8 ounces soft goat cheese, cut into 8 slices (recommended: Boucheron goat cheese)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Place the bacon in a large skillet or griddle and cook until golden brown and crisp. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate. Break each piece into fourths and set aside.

Heat a cast iron griddle or cast iron pan over medium heat.

Spread butter on 1 side of each slice of bread. Layer 4 of the slices of the bread with 3 to 4 slices of brie, 2 tomato slices, watercress, 2 slices goat cheese, and 4 slices of broken up bacon and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the remaining bread slices on top, butter side up and cook on the griddle until golden brown on both sides and the brie has melted.

Reading these recipes prompted me to search FoodBlogSearch for other grilled cheese recipes. Simply Recipes (you know this is one of my favorite sites) has a recipe that sounds de-lish:

Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Bacon and Pear Recipe

Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Bacon and Pear

A few months ago I had the pleasure of accompanying Amy of Cooking with Amy and Brett of In Praise of Sardines for a light bite to eat at the Arlequin deli in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. Amy highly recommended the grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and pear, and it was, true to Amy's suggestion, fabulous. The sweet pear worked beautifully with the bacon and sharp cheddar. A great combination. Bartlett pears are just now finally making a show at the markets and I made these sandwiches for the family this week. We also tried them with ham, in place of the bacon. The bacon won. There is a debate here as to whether gruyere would do well in place of the cheddar. "No, no, no, it would overwhelm the pear." We haven't tried that combo yet, but if you do, please let us know how it goes.

French or Italian loaf bread, sliced
Bacon, cooked
Bartlett pear
Sharp white cheddar cheese (high quality)
Butter, softened and spreadable

pear-bacon-sandwich-1.jpg pear-bacon-sandwich-2.jpg
pear-bacon-sandwich-3.jpg pear-bacon-sandwich-4.jpg

1. Heat a cast iron skillet to medium high heat. Layer your sandwich - bread slice, cheese, pear slices, bacon, bread slice. Spread butter over the top of the sandwich. Place the sandwich top side down (butter side down) on the hot pan. Butter the exposed side of the sandwich. Let cook for a minute and then use a metal spatula to turn the sandwich over to its other side.

pear-bacon-sandwich-5.jpg pear-bacon-sandwich-6.jpg

2 While you are toasting the sandwich on the remaining side, press down on the sandwich with a spatula. Alternatively, you can mimic a panini press (albeit without the ridges) by heating a smaller cast iron pan on a separate burner. Use the weight of this pan to press down on the sandwich from above.

The sandwich is done when the sides are toasted and the cheese is melted. Cut in half and serve.

This one was just interesting to me... It sounds so different. From YumSugar:

Honey-Basil Grilled Cheese
Original Recipe
Honey-Basil Grilled Cheese
INGREDIENTS
4 slices multigrain bread (I used Vital Vittles 12-Grain)
6 strawberry tomatoes, thinly sliced
3 oz. part-skim mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced with a sharp knife
10 slices fontina cheese, cut with a cheese slicer
12 to 16 large basil leaves
Honey to taste
Butter (to coat bread for grilling)
DIRECTIONS

Makes two sandwiches.

  1. To make each sandwich, spread one side of each slice of bread with desired amount of butter.

  2. On the opposite side of two of the slices, spread a generous amount of honey, just enough to cover the surface.

  3. Divide the tomatoes between the two sandwiches and arrange the slices on top of the honey. Then, lay four slices of fontina cheese on top of each tomato-topped slice.

  4. Divide the basil leaves between the two sandwiches and lay atop the fontina. Then top each basil-covered slice with the sliced mozzarella. Top with remaining bread slices, butter side up.

  5. Over very low heat, preheat a skillet then grill the sandwiches one at a time. To ensure the cheese melts evenly, cover the skillet with a lid while cooking. Grill each side for about 3 to 5 minutes, until lightly browned.

I'm sure you have your own favorites -- I'd love to hear them! One last thing, just to be clear I am not pulling a Cindy McCain -- these are not my recipes, I collected them online. Smiles!

Spring has Sprung

We were lucky to have beautiful weather on Saturday. Sunny skies (except when I took the photos below!) and 70s. Woo hoo!

We did some yard clean up, then began putting up our yardscapes.

Our pagoda and benches look so nice!

The bunnies are out :)

We put out our chimes.

Steve made this one.

Mike had to get out the big ladder for this one.

This one is so pretty. I wish I had gotten the hanger in the picture. Steve made that, too.

I restrung this one. It had been broken for three years... Guess we like wind chimes!

Aren't the crocuses pretty?

Have a happy day!
