DATE: November 28, 2008
SUBJECT: Lee Baxandall (1935-2008)
TO: All naturists

Dear Naturist,

The Naturist Society has announced with profound sadness that its founder, Lee Baxandall, has died in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Baxandall, who had suffered from Parkinson's Disease, was 73 years old at the time of his death on November 27, 2008.

Baxandall began his work as a naturist activist more than 30 years ago. With a background in writing and publishing, Lee's naturist passion led him in 1976 to form the Free Beaches Documentation Center, which he located in his hometown of Oshkosh. By 1980, Lee had founded The Naturist Society (TNS), and TNS had presented its first Gathering for naturists. 'Clothed with the Sun,' the flagship publication of TNS in its early years, was renamed 'Nude & Natural,' or more simply, 'N' magazine in 1989. Today, the magazine has a staff of professional and volunteer writers, but in the early days, much of the content of the magazine was pure Baxandall.

Lee was also the initiating force behind other familiar naturist organizations. In 1983, it was a Baxandall idea (and $70 in seed money that Lee pulled from his own pocket and gave to Murray Kaufman) that led to the TNS special interest group that would become Gay Naturists International. In 1990, Baxandall jump-started the Naturist Action Committee as an adjunct to TNS. The Naturist Education Foundation followed in 1993.

For the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, 'Lee Baxandall's World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts' was the standard companion for those seeking information on naturist destinations throughout the world. Each edition of the World Guide reflected Lee's naturist philosophy, not only for growing numbers of naturists, but also for the benefit of an expanding mainstream audience. Baxandall's World Guide is the inspiration for 'The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts,' a recent TNS publication that carries on the tradition.

In 2002, recognizing the inevitable effect of his declining health, Baxandall transferred ownership of The Naturist Society to a carefully selected handful of longtime associates. TNS is necessarily a dynamic organization that responds to the changing needs of its members. Nevertheless, owners Nicky Hoffman Lee and Margaret Thornton have remained remarkably faithful to the vision of Lee Baxandall.

DETAILS AND ARRANGMENTS
Arrangements are pending. Lee's family has not yet announced details. More complete obituaries will, of course, appear in N magazine and in The Newsletter. The Naturist Action Committee will distribute further information in the form of NAC Updates, as details become available.

The directors of the Naturist Action Committee and the Naturist Education Foundation join with the ownership and staff of The Naturist Society in marking, with respect and appreciation, the passing of an exceptional individual.

"Body acceptance is the idea. Nude recreation is the way."
- Lee R. Baxandall (1935-2008)

The Pagan Stone

I finished reading The Pagan Stone last night. The third book in the Blood Brothers series is also the final of the trilogy. I started it on Tuesday morning and did my best to squeeze in a minute here, an hour there, to finish it. I LOVED IT!!!

If you have been reading the series and haven't gotten it -- it is so great! If you have not read the series, I highly recommend it.

I Tried It!

First, I got Melissa's message with the recipe. Next, Helen asked if I had made it (I had not). Finally, Deb told me she and Paul tried it out. They liked the results.

I didn't have any choice. Really, I didn't.

The bar was set so high, I had to do it, too...

It turned out really well. Not as delicious as a homemade cake, but good for the microwave, and certainly good in a pinch. For quality testing purposes, I had the whole thing myself. You know, to make sure it was safe.
Have a Happy Day!

World's Most Dangerous Cake

Melissa sent this to me today... Sure does look tempting!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.  Add the egg and mix thoroughly.

Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?

Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

This Cracked Me Up

One of the authors that I faithfully follow is Susan Wiggs. I love the way she writes, her stories are always well developed, and they always make me cry happy tears. This month on her blog she has been posting things she is grateful for. Yesterday she posted she is grateful for Google. I read along, nodding my head. Yup, yup, me too. Then I got to the third reason -- and I just started laughing -- this is part of why I like this lady so much. She has a great sense of humor. Here's what she wrote:

…and their latest, which wickedly pleases my sarcastic side, “Let Me Google That For You.” Next time you get a clueless, easily-resolved question from a co-worker, type his question into the search bar and click any button. LMGTFY will then create a link to share, directing the co-worker to a page with a Google tutorial with his specific question. The tutorial ends with snarky, “Was that so hard?” and a list of the search results. Note: if you’re really exasperated, you might need to bump it up a level. Just don’t use that one on your mother.

I love it!! Thanks for the laughs, Susan!

Birthdays, Cubed

First and foremost, Happy Birthday to my mother-in-law Pat! I hope you have a wonderful day, full of things that make you smile.

Saturday was Connor and Fiona's 4th birthday. They had a lovely birthday party at My Gym yesterday. Their Nana worked for days (like, 5!) making their cakes.

Connor's astronaut cakes

Fiona's princess cake

Fiona's Angelina Ballerina cake

Aren't they awesome!!!

As you can see, they had a wonderful time!

We did, too :) Happy birthday to our three special people!

Am I on the Same Planet as Kansas City

I can't even believe this... I am living in the wrong part of the country!

Crazy!!!

I can't believe this is so CHEAP!

Hmm... Does that mean I'll be able to buy more Christmas gifts since I'll be spending less on fuel?

Shhh! I am being QUIET!

I don't know why, but I have been very quiet this week. Maybe because Mike is out of town for work? Who knows... Things are just a little stagnant all around for me. No working out, no big accomplishments (other than Christmas shopping)... Just kind of coasting along. Without motivation. Hmmm...

Smiles!

Safe Holiday Shopping

This article was in the MetroWest Daily News and I think it is valuable to all Massachusetts residents (and others in some aspects).

AG offers consumer advice for holiday shopping

In a press release today, Attorney General Martha Coakley offered the following advice to consumers to protect themselves as they kick off the holiday shopping season.

"In light of the state of the economy, consumers may want to consider whether it makes sense to purchase certain gifts this holiday season," said Coakley. "Recently, there have been many reports of stores filing for bankruptcy and it is important for consumers to know their rights and shop wisely."

What protections do I have when buying a gift certificate or gift card in Massachusetts?

Under Massachusetts law, a gift certificate or a merchandise credit must be redeemable for seven years from the date of issuance. The seller must indicate the date of issuance and expiration date on the face of the certificate.

Once a consumer redeems the gift certificate or gift card for 90 percent of its value, the balance is redeemable in cash. A purchaser or holder of a gift certificate which, by its terms, authorizes the purchaser or holder to add value, which has been redeemed in part, such that the value remaining is $5 or less, must make an election to receive the balance in cash or continue using the gift certificate. A gift certificate with a zero balance is void.

Note, however, that there are some serious restrictions on the applicability of these protections, including the seven year expiration date.

State law does not apply to gift cards issued by a national bank, even though these cards may be issued by an entity other than the bank. For instance, Simon Mall Gift Cards do not follow the seven-year rule and also charge fees, because the cards are issued in conjunction with a national bank. National bank-issued cards may be redeemable for a shorter period of time — often one or two years. These cards may also have fees attached that will diminish the value of the card over time — some have monthly "maintenance" or "dormancy" fees that may kick in when the card is not used within a few months; they may also have fees assessed for checking on the value remaining on the card; lost or stolen card fees; or replacement fees if the card expires by its own terms but you still have value remaining on the card you want to use. These fees must be disclosed to you, so read all materials provided with the card.

What if the retailer I buy a gift certificate from goes out of business?

In some, but not all cases, you may be able to receive some reimbursement for the value of the gift certificate.

If the retailer files for the protection of the bankruptcy court, you should file a document called a "proof of claim" with the court. Include whatever information you have about the value of the certificate, and a photocopy of the certificate or gift card. Bankruptcy allows for the payment of claims depending on assets available.

If a company has announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is "reorganizing," the company may ask the court for the ability to honor gift certificates. It may be in the best interests of a company to maintain goodwill if it wants to continue operating, so this request makes good business sense, but it is not always certain that this request will be made to the court.

If a company files for "liquidation" in bankruptcy, through Chapter 7, there may not be assets available to pay off all or even some of the value of consumer gift certificates. Some bankruptcy courts consider gift certificates to be "consumer deposits" under the bankruptcy code, entitled to certain unsecured creditor priority over some other claims, but not all courts consider this to be the case.

If the retailer does not file for bankruptcy, but simply closes, that does not necessarily mean that you won't be able to use your gift certificate. Some businesses file in state court for an "assignment for the benefit of creditors," and that procedure may also provide for an orderly distribution of assets.

Some businesses may otherwise provide for a way to transfer the value of a gift certificate to another location or to someone who buys the customer list.

If a business unfairly took advantage of consumers, the Attorney General's Office may also bring a legal action seeking recovery of the value of unredeemed gift certificates or gift cards.

What types of return policies can a story have?

A Massachusetts retailer can typically have any refund, return or cancellation policy it wants, but that policy must be clearly and conspicuously disclosed to the consumer prior to the conclusion of the transaction. Many retailers provide the disclosure by a posted policy at the register or service desk.

If a return policy is only listed on the sales receipt, that is not considered clear and conspicuous prior disclosure, as you only get a receipt after the sale is completed.

If no return policy was disclosed, goods may be returned within a reasonable period of time.

Restrictions in return policies do not apply to defective goods—goods which cannot be used as intended, such as the toaster that will not toast or a television that does not get a picture. The store is required to give you a choice of a refund, repair or replacement.

Be sure you know the store's return policy, so you can tell your intended gift recipients. Many stores offer "gift receipts" without the price on them so a recipient can return or exchange the gift. You may want to request such a receipt if the store provides this service.

If a retailer is "liquidating," is it safe to purchase products from it?

If a store is liquidating, it may mean that someone is selling off some or all of its merchandise and that they may or may not be going out of business. Ask the retailer what its future plans are and what their return policy is. In addition, you may want to ask for a copy of the original receipt as well for your own records."

Never buy a gift certificate or gift card from a seller saying it is liquidating unless you know what it means — the business may not be there tomorrow, and you may be out of luck.

If you contemplate buying something at a "liquidation sale," do your homework first. Compare prices before you buy, as you may not be able to return purchases. A retailer in liquidation can still have any return, refund, or cancellation policy it wants, as long as those policies are disclosed before the purchase is made. While it may not accept defective merchandise from return, if the store is closed, that policy will not be useful to you.

How can a consumer protect him or herself while shopping online?

Only do business with companies you know, Coakley advised. If you are intent on doing business with a company you know nothing about, research where the company is located and call the local Better Business Bureau to check on their reputation. Consumer's can also check with the Attorney General's Consumer Hotline by calling (617) 727-8400.

Though many Web sites offer secure transactions, it may be safer to order by phone or mail. If you decide to purchase online, you may want to pay with a credit card as it gives you the most consumer protection, including the right to dispute a charge if the item is not as represented.

Check the business's Web site for return policies. If the Web site does not provide information about delivery dates and returns, be cautious about proceeding with the purchase.

Order as early as possible. If it is important to you to get a gift to someone by a particular date, order as early as possible and check the delivery dates specified by the site.

If you are doing business with a company outside the U.S., know how much you are paying. Are the prices stated on the Web site in U.S. or foreign currency? Research contact information for the company. It is especially important to note that even if you are making purchases with a credit card, consumer protections may not extend to purchases made outside of the U.S. The general limit for consumer protections on credit cards is within your state, or 100 mile radius of your home, though some credit card companies will extend those protections — ask first, shop later.

Federal and state laws protect consumers from fraudulent use of credit cards and debit cards. You are only responsible for $50 under state law if your credit or debit card has been used for purchases you did not authorize. Some credit card companies actually provide for zero liability for unauthorized use.

Consumers who have questions about retail laws in Massachusetts or wish to make a complaint against a business should contact the Attorney General's Consumer Hotline at (617) 727-8400. The Attorney General's Web site, www.mass.gov/ago, offers additional tips on retail rights and consumer protections.

A Bond Night

Mike and I enjoyed the night out for the Bond premier last Friday. We arrived at the premium theater in Framingham around 5:45 pm. We enjoyed dinner and drinks before the movie and it was nice to be at the theater with no worries about missing the movie.

There were bags and bags of popcorn inside the door the theater. I loved that, and of course gobbled up a whole bag during the movie (even though I didn't finish my dinner). Our seats were great and it was so nice to have reserved seats.

The movie itself was good. We enjoyed Casino Royale more, but the acting in this one was good. There was a lot of action -- I missed the traditional suave Bond-ness of previous movies. The director of this one, Marc Forster, will not be doing another Bond. We're pretty happy about that...

We had a great night out and enjoyed the special time we made of the premier.

Have a happy day!

She Lives!

Ok, it is not really exciting. I do live... I just thought I would mention that, as I have been remiss in my blogging. This has also extended to me watching me food intake, by the way... I guess it happens now and again.

So! What is going on with us? Not too much, really. We have been plugging away, anxiously awaiting Quantum of Solace!!! I just capitalized it because I wanted to...We have reservations (though no confirmation, which makes me nervous) to see it at the "Premium" theater. Popcorn and soda are included in the ticket price -- along with stadium seating in "high back ultra-leather seats" (that is a quote from the website) and access to a bar with alcholic beverages and food service at our seats until the movie begins. Sounds great, huh?! We're looking forward to it!

Last night's premier of Top Chef (we DVR'd it and will watch it tonight) is a distant second on the excitement scale. We'll queue it up tonight after This Old House. Boy, I sure make it sound like we just sit on our duffs...

That's right, we don't just sit on our duffs. We also eat :) I am going to make ceviche this weekend. I am substituting tilapia and scallops for the red snapper (the store did not have filets, only whole snapper and I didn't want to clean it). It sounds yummy to me.

That's all for now! Hope you are having a good week!

Missing cat back home after 13 years

This story is too good to ignore...

Missing cat back home after 13 years

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SANTA ROSA, Calif.— A California couple recently had an unexpected reunion with their pet cat who went missing more than 13 years ago.

The cat, named George, was last seen by Melinda Merman and Frank Walburg in 1995. He recently resurfaced when the manager of a mobile home park trapped the sickly feline and gave him to an animal hospital.

A microchip implanted in George allowed him to be traced back to his owners.

Merman says after George disappeared she visited animal shelters and wrote to veterinarians in search of the gray, yellow-eyed cat, who now weighs less than half his original 14-pounds.

But Merman and Walburg say George is eating well and displaying some of his old behavior, like jumping at flickering light on the wall.

Roman history comes to life in Google Earth

This is really cool.

via Google LatLong by Kate on 11/12/08

Were you someone who struggled to stay awake in ancient history class? If so, perhaps this was due to those uninspiring "artist renditions" in your textbook. Reading countless pages that described how a monument, building or city may have appeared at the time can be pretty difficult to imagine.

Well, today we introduced a new approach to learning about ancient history: the ability to go back in time and explore Rome as it existed in 320 AD -- in 3D!

All of this is possible through the new Ancient Rome 3D layer in Google Earth. To activate the layer, simply open the "Gallery" folder in the "Layers" panel and select "Ancient Rome 3D."

The new layer, produced by the University of Virginia's Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH) and based on its Rome Reborn model, contains over 6,700 3D buildings and 250 Google Earth placemarks that allow Google Earth users to explore and learn about this fascinating period of history.

This is the first time that we have incorporated an ancient city in Google Earth. Going back in time presented some new challenges, such as how to handle the ancient terrain which was clearly different than modern day. We needed to ensure that modern day imagery, terrain and buildings didn't interfere with the ancient Rome model so we opted for a simple overlay.

This exciting new layer also serves as the inspiration for the Google Ancient Rome 3D Curriculum Competition, a first-ever Google contest geared towards K-12 educators in the US. Whether your lesson plan involves teaching geometry through Roman architecture or re-imagining ancient history with this new visualization tool, there's fame and an awesome prize package waiting for you! The submission deadline is February 9th, so get those creative engines revved up soon!

So go ahead, fly down to the Roman Forum and experience what it may have felt like to stand on the Rostra of Augusta and make a political speech. Or, if you've fantasized about being a gladiator in the Colosseum, go for it. Simply fly there in Google Earth, enter through the ground level door and envision the crowds cheering you on! Take a look at this video to see what adventures await:

Omnes viae Romam ducunt (all roads lead to Rome).

Obama Releases Election Night Flickr Set (via Lifehacker)

I got this on my Lifehacker feed today. The site is getting hit -- HARD -- but perserverance will win out if you really want to see the President Elect and family in Election Night snaps.

via Lifehacker by Kevin Purdy on 11/7/08

The Obama campaign posts an 82-picture Flickr set of candid shots from the night of the election. The Creative-Commons-licensed pics show the candidate and his family in their hotel room while the results were tallied, and then heading to the stage for his victory speech. [via]

Blogger Updates

Though this is not important to most, I just want to let you know Blogger has added the ability for you to note "reactions" to each post. I have enabled that here, with choices of "funny", "interesting", and "huh?". I also fixed the comments section, which has been broken for a long time.

What a Beautiful Thing: Commuting to Boston Metro

Well, I am being a bit facicious today. For whatever reason, traffic was a snarled nightmare this morning. I left the house at 8 am and did not arrive at work until 9:45 am. My normal commute was more than twice as long as usual, for no apparent reason.

I finally arrived in Framingham after the 45 minute ride down I-290 to I-495 to I-90. I jumped onto Route 9 instead and continued my journey for another hour. As I sat in the car, I grumpily thought "This SUCKS!!!". Then the picture (to the right) popped into my head.I have to tell you, I really started cracking up. I thought, well, I can sit here and be grouchy for the rest of the ride, or I can make the best of it and just ride it out in peace. So, that is what I did. I didn't love it, but I did get to listen to lots of music.
One thing I have learned (after much pain) over the years is that if I bring a thermal cup of morning wake up juice in the car, I cannot drink it right away. On rides like this morning, I would never make it. I would have to pull over and run into the woods or something before I sprung a leak. Scary... Thinking about that made me laugh, too.
I guess the good news is that my day will go faster!

86 Winter American Bistro

Deb, Helen and I had a great Girls Night Out last night. We met for dinner at 86 Winter American Bistro on Water St in Worcester. We were seated in an area with only one other table occupied with diners (out of about 25 tables). Hmmm, we must have looked like we'd be loud!

We enjoyed different entrees. I had the Half and Half (half order of meatloaf and half order of macaroni and cheese. served with vegetable), Deb had the Chicken Marsala (chicken tenderloins sautéed with a domestic mushroom melánge finished in a sweet marsala. tossed with penne), Helen had the special (beef tenderloin with little purses of something with truffle oil -- I can't remember exactly). We decided to decline on desert (a big concession for me, especially!) and ended the night with hugs and farewells.

What a great time!

YES WE CAN!

I stayed up last night to watch the elections. Well, I tried to stay up. I really dozed in the living room and woke up off and on to check the progress of the returns.

I'm sure many of you know that I am very opinionated about my political opinions. I will keep my comments brief.

I saw both campaign speeches. I was very impressed by John McCain's encouragement to his supporters to come together as a country and work towards change. His concession speech had a positive message and he did not accept the chants of his suppporters as the "right" reaction.

I felt Obama's speech spoke volumes about the man. Both with his words and with his actions he conveyed how difficult the next few years may be, but that if we work together, we can restore this country. His words and his expression were as serious as the office of President. The other thing that I found very touching occurred at the end of the speech. Obama and Biden's family flooded the stage. It was a beautiful mix of people that were more representative of the people in our country than in any Presidential election -- ever. There was a mix of young and old, black, white, and other. And everyone was embracing.

I hope our country can do the same and change the future together.

Get Out and VOTE!!!

My morning flew right by and I forgot to put out my very important message-- Be sure to VOTE!!!!

Everyone knows today is the Presidential Election. I don't care who you vote for (ok, that is a lie, I want you to vote for the guy want), what is important is that you vote at all! Our democracy is powered by the voice of the people. If you don't express yourself at the polls, I hope to God that you don't express yourself to me. I feel pretty strongly that people who don't cast a ballot don't have the right to cast judgement after election day.

Yup, my opinions are strong. And I don't feel I have to or need to apologize for them.

Brian is in Recovery

Good news! I got a call from my mom this afternoon reporting that Brian's surgery went well. He is currently in recovery. In addition to replacing his lead, the surgeon replaced the internal battery for the defibby. He should be golden now. Expected release is tomorrow.

Thanks to all of you who have expressed concern and kind thoughts!

Gas Still Low in MO!

Today's prices... I just can't believe it!

Early Voting (Florida)

Pat and Deirdre were out at the polls in Florida on Sunday so that Deirdre could do early voting. After she finished, they took a look at the lines and were shocked.
The lines stretched down for a few blocks and around the corner... Crazy! I'm hoping to be in and out of my polling place tomorrow evening...

Good Weekend

We had a great weekend! We got lots done in the yard (more raking), undigging the pavers in the Japanese garden, and organizing/cleaning the barn. The barn was a biggie.

We had some fun, too. We did some shopping and got some good deals. Macys was having a home sale, so I got a new comforter set for our bedroom (this was the second choice, the first was quite damaged when I got it home so had to be returned).
We also got a new warming blanket and regular blanket for our room.
I am still in planning stages for our third bedroom which is currently an office and slowly inthe process of being changed. I picked up a great twin-sized bed in a bag for that room for just $50. I can't find a photo of it online, though.
We also did well in getting Mike a couple of new coats (Macys) and a nice casual top (EMS). All in all, a successful shopping weekend.
We took in a movie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, with Steve and Helen on Saturday night. It was pretty cute. If you go, definitely stay through the credits -- otherwise you'll be disappointed.
Now only two days until the election... I'm nervous!

Change is in the Air

First off, for those of you who read our blog through a reader, we've changed our theme for Thanksgiving! If you are not reading the actual page, hop over to http://tlhorgan.blogspot.com to check it out!

Next up.... When we bought our house 7 years ago, part of what we loved (and still do) was that there are no houses within close site to our own. Our neighbor on one side has 4 acres. On the other, we thought the neighbor had 7 acres. It turns out it is actually 13.25 acres. The guy is in his golden years and we have known that the land would be prime for subdividing into many housing lots.

Looks like that time is getting much closer. We noticed a road into part of the property this summer. This morning Mike noticed flags demarcating the property line. We're not sure how this will play out nor how long it will take, but we're betting we'll have neighbors we can see within 2 years. S@!t...

Hope your weekend is happy!
